What Is Lock Icons iphone

lock icons iphone

You’ve noticed a lock icon on your iPhone, but you’re not sure what it means. Because there is a limited amount of space on your iPhone screen, Apple relies on small, but useful, icons to keep you informed about the status of the things that are currently happening on your device. Some of these symbols are straightforward to recognize, but others can be perplexing because they could represent any number of different statuses.

The lock icon is one that can be particularly perplexing. When the Portrait Orientation Lock is enabled on your phone, as shown in the image below, this is visible on the screen.

When you physically rotate your device, this setting prevents your screen from rotating as a result. Following the steps below, you will be able to learn how to disable this feature and remove the lock icon from your computer.

Remove The Lock Icon

This section was written on an iPhone SE running iOS 13.1 at the time of writing. Keep in mind that this is only required on older iPhone models, such as the iPhone 5 and iPhone 6, that do not have a Home button. Because of the limited amount of space available in the status bar on newer iPhone models without Home buttons, the lock icon will not appear in the status bar on those models. You can still use rotation lock on these newer iPhone models; however, you will not see the padlock icon in the status bar when doing so.

Step 1: To access the Control Center, swipe up from the bottom of the Home screen.
Step 2: To disable the portrait orientation lock, tap on the lock icon on the toolbar.

As previously stated, the section below will show you how to change this setting and remove the lock icon on older iOS versions. To learn more, see the section below.

A padlock icon appears on your lock screen, but not in the status bar located at the top of your iPhone, indicating that you aren’t using the portrait orientation lock. Locking the device is indicated by the presence of the padlock icon. You can unlock it using your iPhone passcode, your Touch ID, or your Face ID, among other methods. You will need to know which iPhone model you have in order to figure out how to remove the lock icon from the lock screen of your phone.

The difference between the device lock and the portrait orientation lock icons can be distinguished by the circular arrow that surrounds the icon. The device lock icon is represented by the lock icon without an arrow around it, and the orientation lock icon is represented by the lock icon with an arrow around it.

It is possible that the device behavior will be affected if your iPhone or iPad displays the padlock icon in the status bar of your device. For example, if you have a video streaming app that you use to watch movies or television shows and you prefer to rotate the device to landscape in order to do so, you will be unable to do so if the orientation is set to lock.

For those of you who have been reading this article and are perplexed as to why anyone would want to lock their screen rotation and remove one of the more useful features on their device, there are a couple of compelling arguments. It’s possible that the most common one involves using the iPhone while lying down on your back and staring at your phone. When you move around in this position, your phone will move with you as well. This can frequently result in orientation switches, which can be extremely inconvenient and frustrating. Also useful is the fact that some picture and video orientations are difficult to view on an iPhone, and locking the screen rotation allows you to move your phone around to see them better rather than having the device constantly switch between portrait and landscape.
